Pretty darned good. Spoiler alert for those who believe in spoilers.This one starts with Dave Stewart. who works at Provident-American Banks customer service department. Its a typical Monday where Dave works the one-thirty shift.
Dave girlfriend Maya Weiss gave him a ride to work and then headed home. Seems thats the last normal thing that happened for the rest of the day.
Porsche works in the cubicle across the aisle from Dave. A Porsche who will survive the night along with Dave.
The shift progresses until Dave gets a text from Nate Reid.
Reid is a former Delta Force operator and lives in Wyoming. He's been helping Dave prep for what he knows is coming. What that is Dave has no idea but whatever happens he and Maya have prepped for it big time. Nate give him the code word to call him.
Once he starts his break Dave calls Nate and Nate tells him to watch the news. Dave hits the internet and looks for the news but every story on every news channel is days old and looped. He and Porsche think its strange but can't make heads or tails of it. Some internet channel news is off the air totally.
Once Dave gets back to work he realizes he's getting no calls from no farther West than Colorado, or East of Tennessee. Then the calls dry up altogether.
Dave himself is ex Air Force and his job was Intelligence and Communications with a tour of duty in Iraq. He's no stranger to death, destruction and people who want to kill him. Dave was rated Marksmen with a rifle in the Air Force and he is no stranger to pistols, rifles and knives. In fact he's pretty damned handy with all three. Abilities that will serve him well in the coming days.
Dave is also prepared to survive even after the call center is taken over by the police and men in black.
Everyone is herded into the buildings basement. Not Dave and Porsche though. Dave decides being in the basement is a bad idea especially with the news blackout. He's also wondering just who in the hell those men in black are. The policeman with them is pretty much a dick as well. Porshe decides she sticking with Dave.
The two of them hide out and get ready to leave the building. Porsche says she's going with Dave and Dave is bugging out to find Maya and stick to his plan and his rules for survival.
So begins one pretty damned good read.
This one has Dave, Porshe, Maya, Amy, Maya's daughter, Maya's ex Karl, Dave and Maya's bug out plan, Cassie and Bryce who are Nates ex wife and son, Sherman Dave's Rottweiler, Leo Dave's cat, Daves plan, a trip through Spriingfield to Sherwood, a group of soldiers Dave saves who then kidnapp him, a walker named Deacon, DHS guys who don't have anyone's best interests at heart, good guys, bad guys, those who want what others have, two vehilces left for Dave by Nate, a run from Sherwood towards Wyoming, Blackhawks, Marines, a staging area for civilians, walkers overruning that area, Dave and the others making their escape, those who try to shoot them down and Dave Stewart and Amy landing in one hell of a mess with an assortment of players.

This look at the zombie apocalypse starts with someone who's actually prepared for the stuff to hit the fan. Dave Stewart is an office worker who's written some novels in his spare time along with getting ready for an epic disaster. His girlfriend drops him off at the cubicle-farm office where he works. A local sheriff's assistant shows up and tries to herd everyone into the basement as the undead swarm the parking lots outside. Dave knows that listening to the officer is likely to end badly and starts his emergency bug-out plan. The cute girl in the cubicle across the way helps him escape the building and the parking lot (she has a car). His first plan is to find his girlfriend and to leave town with some supplies. He has a hideaway far away from densely populated areas. Only some thing don't go according to plan.
The most interesting parts of the story are the technical details of his escape plan and his knowledge of weapons, supplies, and vehicles. The descriptions are very convincing. It's like Tom Clancy wrote a zombie novel. The appendix has links to the various resources the main character uses as well as Dave's rules of survival (reminiscent of Zombieland's rules). The action scenes are also well written--both easy to follow and exciting to read (again like Clancy).
The story suffers a little bit from its large cast (Dave has a girlfriend who has an ex; he also has an ex who has her own boyfriend; there's a sprinkling of children) who aren't very individualized other than Dave. I struggled to remember who was related to whom and how. Also, the story ends abruptly without a proper conclusion, though the author is working on a sequel.
As a first part, the book is enjoyable. I'd read the sequel.
Wouldn't it be great to have an ex military friend who helps you plan and purchase supplies over the last few years for a disastrous event that is yet to come? Then when it finally "hatches", he calls to inform you that it's time to go and execute their long awaited plan. However, sometimes, plans do not go as expected.
The main character, Dave, is a published author of several novels and works in a call center during the day. He is here when he gets the word from his friend to "Bug Out". He and co-worker, Porche, must evade police and military forces just to escape from their place of employment. It's a race against time, but many of the pieces are not where they are supposed to be. First step is to rescue his girl friend on the other side of town, but she is not home. Zombies are everywhere!
The book is filled with suspense and readers will not be able to put it down without finding out what happens next. It's short at 161 pages and easy to read - most readers could finish it during a Saturday afternoon. Great job Mr. Reeder!
My only criticism is that many of these series books are published months apart - and thus, lose interested readers for future installments. I wish authors would complete an entire series and then publish all the individual books at the same time - allowing readers to continue purchasing/reading until the series ends. This was a great story - somebody let me know when the next installment is available so I don't miss out. Highly recommended! "Zompac Survivor Exodus" is definitely in the top ten of this genre!
