When Barbara Manger left her home in Milwaukee for a yoga retreat in Houston, she never imagined she would receive a phone call that would turn her world upside down. But she did-a call in which she learned that Matt, her twenty-nine-year-old son, had been struck and killed by a van during a bike race in Chicago. Riding Through Grief is the story of how a family faced head-on the sudden, accidental death of their son, and created unique ways to honor his memory that also helped them deal with their loss. Manger's inspiring story gives hope to those facing the all-too-common experience of the unexpected death of a loved one. The book also offers insight to friends and family members trying to understand and support them in their time of need.

I finished Barbara Manger's narrative with tears in my eyes and a slight smile on my face. At the age of twenty-nine, Manger's son, Matt, was killed during a bike race in Chicago. This beautifully written tribute to Matt and his all-too-short life is a meaningful and moving accomplishment. The book will remain on my bookshelf and I know that I will read it, or parts of it, over many times again. I came away from my first read with profound sadness and deep admiration for what this young man's family and friends have done over the years to deal with the unimaginable loss and continue on with their lives that are forever changed. Their courage in going forward seems largely fueled by their desire to honor Matt's memory in the most fitting ways possible; to leave little pieces of his big personality in his favorite places for others to take note of and enjoy. This heartfelt memoir poignantly captures the depth of a mother's profound love for her child. It should serve as an inspiration to anyone who is trying to make sense of a personal tragedy.Product details

Riding Through Grief Barbara Manger 9780989792318 Books Reviews
Reading about one mother's loss and how she navigated it gave me multiple windows through which to re"view" the losses in my own life. My own remembering was healing for me. This is not only a book about grief it is about life, memory and celebration. There is a power and honesty in Barbara's sparse prose. Her descriptions of Wisconsin landscapes are simple but so vivid reflecting her inner landscape. She has given us a gift, sharing deeply her unique passage through loss.
Barbara Manger's Riding Through Grief leads me to envision a rich tapestry, woven through with the strands of Barbara's reactions to the death of her son Matt. Anguish over the loss and despair at the finality of it, but also reminiscences of good times, the pleasure of knowing how much he meant to his friends, a mother's delight at watching him grow up, and pride in his accomplishments and the kind of man he became. It was moving to follow the family's decision to celebrate Matt's life and to preserve his presence with tangible markers that Matt would have loved. As Barbara acknowledges, it's a difficult story to tell, but she does it with grace, and her love for Matt shows through on every page.

This is a collection of beautifully written essays on the pain of being human, made accessible and compelling by Ms. Manger's courage in letting us see her struggles to survive the death of her 29-year-old son, Matt. After Matt is killed in a biking accident, many of her friends say they can't imagine what she must be going through, but I wonder whether it isn't closer to the truth that any parent CAN imagine this only too well. And we shy away from the thought, from those who have suffered such a tragedy. But Ms. Manger draws us in anyway with her stories of her wild, wonderful son and the many friends, his and her's, who lives were made better, more joyful, by Matt's lively spirit and pleasure in the day-to-day, as a child and an adult. Her path to healing is both spontaneous and measured, her grief both deeply personal and universal. I would recommend this book to anyone who is human.
Riding through Grief is an excellent remembrance and tribute to Matt Manger-Lynch. I had the good fortune of knowing Matt when he was a camper and a staff member at Camp Manito-wish YMCA. This book is biography of Matt and the story of the author's ongoing grieving over the death of her son. I appreciated the stories that filled the gap between when I knew Matt as an energetic 12/13 year old that could thrive in any wilderness situation and Matt as a college student working through the challenges of leading young boys on wilderness expeditions. This is a very personal look at the family's experience when their child, brother, spouse, and uncle dies suddenly. I am grateful for the opportunity to have read this book and honored to have known Matt. Thanks.
(Note I was given a copy of the book by the author)
A real, raw and gut wrenching account of attempting to carry on after the death of a son. Also a very healing perspective and of love and loss.
This was quite an amazing story of an extraordinary family, who lost one of their own and celebrated his life in many beautiful ways, devoting much creative and physical and temporal energy. I am not sure I can recommend it to friends who have lost their children because few families have or could have done what they did to commemorate their darling boy/man, Matt. Now the unimaginable has happened. Bill and Barbara have lost their son Luke in an avalanche in Jackson, Wy.......I loved reading it, beautiful and poignant Ned inspiring.
Reading this book over these past few nights has been quite an experience for me bringing up so many emotions. The author shows incredible courage sharing her heart with all of us in such intimate ways. Reading her story has helped me feel so much. The subject, Matt was such a bright beaming character and the many active ways that the author and her family have chosen to honor him since his death are so inspiring and meaningful.
As someone who has experienced a difficult personal loss, this book was incredibly powerful and moving. The cheerful, inspiring, and sometimes funny stories of Matt are sprinkled in with the raw, honest agony of grief. This book reminded me that grieving is about honoring the person you've lost and celebrating the gifts they have brought like Matt's zest for cooking and biking and spontaneous adventures. This book left me feeling blessed with ideas for how to better remember and honor my daughter. For that I cannot thank you enough, Barbara Manger.
